“Democratic transitions in Asia” workshop starts

Ulaanbaatar /MONTSAME/ The Mongolia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs Monday launched a workshop “Democratic transitions in Asia” together with the International Institute for Democracy and Electoral Assistance (IDEA).

The workshop’s main objective is to share with other countries achievements and challenges of Mongolia in its effort to develop and strengthen democracy.

In her opening remarks at the workshop, the State Secretary of the Ministry of Justice J.Bayartsetseg underlined that 26 years ago Mongolia made transition to democracy and established its first independent electoral institute, and Mongolia’s electoral legal framework and election systems are considered to be a good example in the region. Furthermore, she informed that Mongolia is developing cooperation with the counties that are new and restored democracies.

The event has brought together governmental and civil society representatives from Afghanistan, Bhutan, Cambodia, Kyrgyzstan, Nepal, Myanmar, East Timor, Sri Lanka, Indonesia and Laos to give reports and exchange views on election matters which are main parts of democratic principles.

Within the workshop that will continue for two days, the attendees will share views on experiences on democratic development, electoral lessons and chances to run elections under fair and open principles.
