Foreign Ministry organizes workshop jointly with IOM
Politics
Ulaanbaatar/MONTSAME/. On October 19, Ministry of Foreign
Affairs of Mongolia and IOM jointly organized a workshop on the review of the
implementation of the Global Compact for Safe, Orderly and Regular Migration
(Global Compact on Migration).
Organized at the MFA’s premises, the workshop brought
together 23 representatives from government agencies, NGOs and UN agencies to
inform on and discuss operational steps to complete the first voluntary review
of the Global Compact on Migration in Mongolia. Participants also identified
priority objectives for Mongolia in the Global Compact for Migration,
familiarized themselves with the soon to be established UN Network on Migration
in Mongolia, and generated ideas for possible future joint projects relevant to
internal/international migration to be submitted for funding to the Migration
Multi-Partner Trust Fund.
Munkhtushig Lkhanaajav, Head of the Consular Department of
MFA, emphasized the need to build on the good collaboration between MFA and IOM
in returning Mongolian citizens stranded abroad due to COVID-19 and,
considering the good practices available globally, to build a comprehensive
program to support the connection and interaction between Mongolia and it’s
diaspora abroad. Representatives of the Ministry of Labour and Social
Protection highlighted the need to increase protection of Mongolian labor
migrants abroad, while our colleagues from UNICEF Mongolia reminded that the
issue of children migrants should be at the forefront of Mongolia’s priority
objectives.
Following the discussion, participants were requested to
fill in the GCM Voluntary Review Questionnaire after the workshop, which
includes questions about migration trends and patterns, migration inclusive
laws and policies, challenges and obstacles for implementation and outputs in
their respective fields and agencies. The resulting national report for
Mongolia will inform the Asia-Pacific Regional Review of Implementation of the
Global Compact for Safe, Orderly and Regular Migration that is now scheduled to
take place in Bangkok, Thailand, from 10 to 12 March 2021.
