Gashuunsukhait Checkpoint to Handle More Coal Exports
Politics
Ulaanbaatar, December 10, 2025 /MONTSAME/. During its regular session on December 10, 2025, the Cabinet of Mongolia approved measures to enhance transportation at the Gashuunsukhait border checkpoint to increase coal exports.
Although
coal exports declined in the first half of this year, government initiatives
have helped improve the flow. Currently, an average of around
1,400 trucks pass through the border daily, and by the end of
November, a total of 41.2 million tonnes
of coal had been exported.
To
boost exports, under Government Resolutions No. 95 and 349 of 2022, 66 hectares of land at Gashuunsukhait were leased
to Smart Eco Trans LLC to establish an
automated container terminal. Of this, 5.3 hectares
that were not used for the intended purpose have been returned to the Checkpoint Administration, enabling better
organization of truck traffic in that area.
Additionally,
the Oyu Tolgoi LLC special-purpose road, which
is used to transport copper concentrate from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., will now
be available for coal transportation during other hours. This is expected to
allow over 1,500 coal trucks to pass through the
road daily.
These
measures are expected to improve the
organization of coal transportation, increase the number of trucks crossing the
border, and raise the volume of coal exports.
