Ulaanbaatar, December 9, 2025 /MONTSAME/. Member of Parliament and Minister of Foreign Affairs of Mongolia Battsetseg Batmunkh met with the Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Rafael Mariano Grossi in Vienna, Austria.

During the meeting, Minister Battsetseg expressed concern over the stability of the global nuclear non-proliferation regime and underscored that since declaring its territory a Nuclear-Weapon-Free Zone in 1992, Mongolia has consistently contributed to international efforts to strengthen peace, security, and nuclear non-proliferation.

Highlighting the significance of Mongolia’s nuclear-weapon-free status, Director General Rafael Grossi commended the country’s active engagement in ensuring nuclear non-proliferation, nuclear safety, and security. He added that Mongolia’s ratification of the Convention on Nuclear Safety and the 2005 Amendment to the Convention on the Physical Protection of Nuclear Material has made an important contribution to global nuclear security.

Since joining the IAEA in 1973, Mongolia has continuously supported the Agency’s activities. The two sides noted that more than 100 national projects have been successfully implemented in areas such as health, food, agriculture, environment, mining, education, and science through the Agency’s Technical Cooperation Programme, which is an important example of mutually beneficial cooperation.

At the conclusion of the meeting, the IAEA expressed its readiness to further strengthen cooperation with Mongolia in the peaceful use of nuclear energy.

The Mongolian side invited Director General Rafael Grossi to visit Mongolia at his convenience and expressed its interest in advancing bilateral cooperation to a new level.
