Commemorative stamp unveiled for 40th anniversary of Mongolia’s space flight

Ulaanbaatar /MONTSAME/. The unveiling ceremony for the postage
stamp issued for the 40th anniversary of Mongolia’s first space flight
was held today at the Institute of Astronomy and Geophysics of the Mongolian
Academy of Sciences.
Hero of Mongolian People’s Republic, Hero of USSR Jugderdemidiin
Gurragchaa and twice Hero of USSR, Hero of Mongolian People’s Republic, Soviet
cosmonaut V.A.Dzhanibekov were illustrated on the 45x33 stamp, which currently
has 20,000 copies, by artist Ts.Battur. With this unveiling, ‘Mongol Post’
company issued its 1074th topical stamp.
“Postage stamps have their own significance of conserving
history aside having roles in mailings”, said cosmonaut J.Gurragchaa during the
ceremony.
This year marks the 40th anniversary of the Mongolia’s first space flight . On March 22, 1981, Hero of Mongolian People’s Republic, Hero of USSR Jugderdemidiin Gurragchaa along with twice Hero of USSR, Hero of Mongolian People’s Republic, Soviet cosmonaut V.A.Dzhanibekov flew into space on the Soyuz 39 spacecraft, landing back on Earth at 7.42 pm on March 30.
With this event, Mongolia became the 10th country in the world to send off a cosmonaut into space, and Mongolian cosmonaut J.Gurragchaa became the 2nd person in Asia, and the 101st person in the world to fly into space.
