‘Disaster Resilient Cities’ project concluded in Mongolia

Ulaanbaatar/MONTSAME/. The USAID-funded ‘Disaster Resilient Cities’ project has been successfully implemented in Ulaanbaatar and Erdenet.

In recent years, the frequency of disasters in the world and in Mongolia has been increasing year by year. The project, which contributed to the UN's ‘Making Disaster Resilient Cities’ initiative in 2010, is based on the Ulaanbaatar, Erdenet cities' ‘Family, Child and Youth Development Agency’, ‘Education and Culture Agency’, ‘Health Department,’and Emergency Management Agency’, 9 districts of the UB city and 6 baghs of Bayan-Undur soum from 2016 to 2020.

In cooperation with the Capital City Governor's Office, the National Emergency Management Agency, and the Emergency Management Agency of Orkhon aimag, we provided support to reduce urban disaster risk, strengthen community resilience, and strengthen the capacity of professional organizations to respond to disasters.

To mention some of the activities conducted:

• The project committee established disaster management committees with 466 members at the bagh level, they were trained by T2T ‘Be Ready’ training module, and provided disaster risk reduction skills to 27,210 citizens.
• ‘Safe Households’ training hall at the Disaster Management Training Center of the National Emergency Management Agency, ‘Savior Mazaalai’, ‘Safe Household’ and ‘Fire Safety Training Rooms’ at the Emergency Management Agency of Orkhon aimag were renovated and provided with training base in order to provide citizens with disaster protection knowledge and understanding.
• Conducted ‘Participatory Disaster Risk Survey’ with the participation of local communities and, based on that, project team conducted risk mitigation activities including building flood bridges, drainage pipes, flood dams, replace electrical installations in accordance with standards.
• Developed ‘Disaster Risk Database’ in cooperation with the National Emergency Management Agency, and launched a public website https://risk.nema.gov.mn/, that centralized in one location in the Disaster Risk Assessment Database.
