Ministry of Education to further develop partnership with University of British Columbia

Ulaanbaatar /MONTSAME/. State Secretary of the Ministry of Education, Culture, Science, and Sports B.Bayarsaikhan visited the University of British Columbia of Canada, and held a meeting with Vice Provost Murali Chandrashekaran, Professor Julian Dierkes, and other officials of the university. 


During the meeting, the sides discussed measures, and programmes being implemented by the Government of Mongolia in the framework of supporting higher education, and developing further partnership with the university.


Since establishing diplomatic relations in 1973, Mongolia has worked in partnership with Canada in many sectors, and is currently successfully implementing joint project of the University of British Columbia, and the Mongolian University of Science and Technology on the comprehensive programme for the mineral industry. In the framework of the project, 30 researchers, engineers, and specialists consisting of representatives from mining and social sectors are being trained,  and a comprehensive program for Bachelor’s, Master’s, and Doctoral degrees is being developed to prepare internationally qualified experts and researchers for the mining sector.



During the meeting, State Secretary B.Bayarsaikhan put forth requests to renew the agreement signed with the university, increase the number of students to be involved in 50% tuition fee scholarship, involve professors and researchers in short-term courses on special conditions, and include Mongolian universities in the special programme organized by the University of British Columbia for building the capacity of university executives.


They also discussed registering Mongolia as a partner country for ‘Mitacs’ national research organization of Canada. Established in 1999, the non-profit national research organization partners with over 70 universities, and 6,000 companies of the world in supporting research, development, social innovation and industry.


The executives of the University of British Columbia expressed that the requests put forth by the State Secretary are possible to be implemented, noting that it aligns with the policy of the university. They then expressed their interest in sending the university professors and students to Mongolia for research over a short term.
