Mongolia Cooperates with Thailand in Weather Modification in the Gobi Region
Environment
Ulaanbaatar, June 30, 2025 /MONTSAME/. Minister of Environment and Climate Change Batbaatar Bat and Director of the National Agency of Meteorology and Environmental Monitoring Battulga Erkhembayar received representatives and officials from the Department of Royal Rainmaking and Agricultural Aviation of the Kingdom of Thailand.
At the meeting, the parties discussed the outcomes of research
on artificial weather modification to increase precipitation in the Gobi
region, reviewed the report of a joint team worked in Dalanzadgad, Umnugobi
aimag, and cooperation directions for 2025–2029.
The experts of Thailand conducted studies based on 10 years of
meteorological data from Umnugobi aimag and a detailed assessment of the techniques
and equipment, currently used in local weather modification operations. As a
result, the Thai experts proposed modernizing the existing rocket and
ground-based generators, increasing the frequency of cloud seeding, introducing
new approaches for dispersing reagents and salt into clouds by small aircraft
and drones, strengthening local human resources through training and practice,
and localizing advanced technologies in compliance with climate change. These
activities will be implemented jointly by Thai experts, the National Agency of
Meteorology and Environmental Monitoring, and the Governor’s Office of Umnugobi
aimag in the next five years.
Currently, Mongolia does not have ground-based generators and the
Thailand side expressed its intent to transfer this technology to Mongolia free
of charge within the framework of cooperation.
The Department of Royal Rainmaking and Agricultural Aviation of
the Kingdom of Thailand operates 30 aircraft, carrying out over 6,000 flights
annually for artificial weather modification.
