Ulaanbaatar /MONTSAME/. Asian Development Bank (ADB) handed over medical and personal protective equipment, first aid kits, and disinfection materials for 29 shelters and one-stop service centers as well as first responder police units across the country.
“Reduced mobility during the
quarantine period and social distancing measures have resulted in victims of
domestic violence having reduced options for support and counseling,” said ADB
Country Director for Mongolia Pavit Ramachandran. “In this context, ADB aims to
help Mongolia respond effectively to domestic violence by ensuring continuous
operation of the response mechanisms.”
Police records for Ulaanbaatar city
indicated a 63% increase in reported cases of domestic violence, with 3,100
during the first quarter of 2020 compared to 1,900 reported during the first
quarter of 2019. 77% of these cases included physical violence, about 90% were
committed in a household setting.
To help address and prevent domestic violence amid COVID-19 in
Mongolia, ADB has approved a US$440,000 technical assistance (TA) grant on “Addressing and Preventing Domestic
Violence in Mongolia during COVID-19 Crisis” in
July 2021. The Executing Agency of the TA is the Ministry of Justice and
Home Affairs and will be implementing the TA until the end of this year.
The TA provided today a MNT256.5 million worth personal protective equipment
including protective gowns,
surgical masks, gloves, and emergency response and disinfection items such as
first aid kits, hand sanitizers, soaps, and thermometers to increase the safety of first responders during the pandemic. Three mobile ultrasound units for examination of
victims were also provided, as well as computers to enhance digital counseling
operations.
14
shelters and 15 one-stop service centers nationwide, as well as the Capital City Police Department, Forensic
Science Department, National Institute of Law, and National Center Against
Violence non-governmental organization have received the equipment.
ADB is committed to achieving a prosperous, inclusive,
resilient, and sustainable Asia and the Pacific, while sustaining its efforts
to eradicate extreme poverty. Established in 1966, it is owned by 68 members—49
from the region.
