ERDENE CHULUUNBAT
(1946-2025)

With deep sorrow, we announce the passing of Mr. Besud Erdene Chuluunbat, the late Director-General of MONTSAME Mongolian National News Agency, a distinguished journalist, translator, researcher, our esteemed colleague and dear friend, Honored Cultural Worker of Mongolia, and Cultural Envoy. He passed away due to illness on August 27, 2025, marking an irreplaceable loss for MONTSAME and Mongolian journalism.

Mr. Erdene was born in 1946 in Tsogt soum of Gobi-Altai aimag. He completed his primary and secondary education there and later studied at Tashkent State University, followed by his employment at the Nalaikh mine. Starting in 1971, he dedicated nearly 40 years of his life to MONTSAME, serving in numerous key positions, including reporter, editor, commentator, translator-editor, responsible editor, literary secretary, executive secretary, director of the agency, correspondent in Beijing, editor-in-chief of The Mongol Messenger newspaper, and advisor to the Director-General. He was a highly skilled journalist, editor, translator, leader, manager, and intellectual with an extensive and accomplished career.

During his tenure at MONTSAME, he was responsible for translating and editing vital documents and daily news in Russian and English, including international treaties, agreements, conferences, and high-level visits. He also prepared and reviewed promotional materials for international outreach. The content he produced to promote Mongolia internationally was disseminated as official information by major global news agencies such as TASS, Xinhua, Yonhap, Kyodo News, and Reuters, serving as a trusted and accurate source for foreign correspondents.

From 1991 to 1996, Mr. Erdene served as Director-General of MONTSAME during a challenging period of social transition. He played a critical role in modernizing and shaping the agency into a contemporary news organization. He initiated and founded key newspaper publications, including Humuun Bichig in traditional Mongolian script and The Mongol Messenger in English.

Alumnus of the School of English at the University of Leeds who completed an advanced journalism course at the Thomson Foundation under the University of Wales, Mr. Erdene authored “The News Machine”, a book outlining the principles of news production, which became a practical guide and standard for news reporting in MONTSAME and Mongolia’s journalism sector.

As a researcher and theorist, he published several important works such as Ikh Gurvaljin (“The Great Triangle”), Bid Yalav (“We Have Won”), Chinad Nuutsyn Mongol Oron (“Mongolia Behind the Secrets”), Undesnii Sergen Mandlyn Asuudald (“On the Issue of National Renaissance”), Pax Mongolica, Fundamentals of the Theory of Super Unification, and Principia Mathematica. He also presented his theory of super unification in countries including the United States and the United Kingdom. Through these contributions, Mr. Erdene revived the concept of Mongolian renaissance and inspired national pride, helping Mongolians appreciate their rich history, culture, and intellectual heritage.

In recognition of his distinguished service, the government and related institutions honored him on numerous occasions. In 2021, he was awarded the title of Honored Cultural Worker of Mongolia by a decree of the President and appointed as Cultural Envoy by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. He was also conferred the title of Honorary Doctor by Ikh Zasag University and received medals commemorating the People’s Revolution, along with awards from the Confederation of Mongolian Journalists (CMJ) such as the Steel Pen and Leading Media Worker.

In appreciation of his many years of dedicated service, MONTSAME honored him with its highest award, Bearer of the Golden Rule, and inscribed his name into the agency’s Book of Honor.

Mr. Erdene Chuluunbat’s modest, compassionate, diligent, and friendly personality will remain forever in our hearts and memories.

We extend our deepest condolences to his family, children, relatives, colleagues, and friends.
