Citizens called to combat air and environmental pollution together

Ulaanbaatar /MONTSAME/. A forum took place under the theme, ‘Let’s join forces against air and environmental pollution’ on April 9. In the frameworks of the monitoring and experimentation on the air pollution in ger areas to be done in 2019, the National Committee for Environmental Pollution Reduction plans to conduct a study on the living environment of ger area in Chingeltei district. The 648 citizens that will take part in the study as well as the khoroo governors and corresponding officials attended the forum.


In his speech, Governor of the Capital City and Mayor of Ulaanbaatar S.Amarsaikhan highlighted that the city has been implementing projects and took certain measures on reducing air and environmental pollution in the past years, and introduced some of the work that was done.


- State-owned steam boilers were connected to the integrated heat system and filters equipped with advanced technology were installed to reduce emission

- The nighttime electricity tariffs (between 9 pm to 6 am) for citizens living in ger areas were discounted. As a result, a total of 109,654 electricity users had 109.2 million kWh, worth MNT 9.4 billion, reduced from their fees in 2018, while 108,154 users had 58.6 million kWh, worth MNT 4.94 billion reduced as of the first two months of 2019.

- The capacity of electricity lines and substations in ger areas were improved in 2019. Currently, the city is working to create the technical possibilities to use 4 kW electric heaters in 41,964 households.

- The service center in khoroo No.7 of Chingeltei district is planned to be put into operation in 2019.

- Hospitals, schools and kindergartens in Ulaanbaatar were provided with air purifiers. Similar measures are to be taken in a more effective way in the future.

- As a result of the establishment of the air quality monitoring department at the Professional Inspection Agency Department of the Capital City, burning plastic, tires and used oil, which omits several times the amount of toxic pollutants than coal when burnt, are now stopped.


In correlation with the year of 2019 declared as the year of citizen-centered public services by the Government of Mongolia, the capital city announced 2019 as the year of development with participation of citizens. Thus, in its frameworks, the Governor of the Capital City called all types of organizations and citizens to join forces for the reduction of air and environmental pollution.
