Commemorative coin released for 40th anniversary of Mongolia’s space flight

Ulaanbaatar /MONTSAME/. On the occasion of the 40th anniversary of Mongolia’s space flight, the Bank of Mongolia (BoM) has issued a commemorative coin, ‘Space - 40 years’. 

 

BoM Governor B.Lkhagvasuren received Hero of Mongolia, recipient of the Order of Chinggis Khaan, cosmonaut J.Gurragchaa and Director of the Institute of Astronomy and Geophysics of the Mongolian Academy of Sciences, academician S.Demberel to present the commemorative coin on March 22.


 

 

While obsidian black was used to depict the wide open space, the Earth and the moon were illustrated in full color on the coin. With an illustration of the ‘Soyuz-39’ spacecraft docked with the ‘Salyut-6’ space station, the logo of the Mongolian side in the Mongolia-Soviet space flight is also shown on the coin. Furthermore, in order to promote the MARS-V project which is working to create an environment that will give the experience of Mars in the Gobi desert of Mongolia, establish a center for experimentation and development, and build the capacity of human resources, the MARS-V project logo has also been depicted on the illustration of the Earth. 

 

Previously, the Bank of Mongolia issued a MNT 1 coin for the Mongolia-Soviet space flight in 1981, and a commemorative coin themed ‘Soyuz-39, Salyut-6’ in 1994 as well as a commemorative silver coin on the occasion of the event’s 30 years’ anniversary that had two versions: one weighing 25 grams and the other weighing 1 kg in 2011.
