Mongolian delegation attending Tobacco Control conference

Ulaanbaatar /MONTSAME/ Delegation led by the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Mongolia to the Swiss Confederation and Permanent Representative of Mongolia to the United Nations Office and other International Organizations in Geneva L.Purevsuren are attending the 8th session of the Conference of the Parties (COP) to the World Health Organization (WHO) Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (FCTC), which is taking place in Geneva on October 1-6.


Representatives of 137 member countries, the UN organizations, other international organizations and civil society discussed the impact of tobacco consumption and production on the environment. The stakeholders are talking about reducing tobacco use and producers. Moreover, the draft of the Mid-Term Strategic Document to improve tobacco control and ensure implementation of the Convention for the next five years will be developed.


The FCTC entered into force in 2005 and considered one of the most important mechanisms to promote public health. Following the Convention, members ratified a wide range of tobacco control laws, increased tax on tobacco, took measures to create tobacco-free environment and legislation related to tobacco advertising.


In 2005, Mongolia joined the convention and the main principles and goals of the FCTC were included in the Law on Tobacco Control, approved by the Parliament in 2012. Currently, a total of 181 countries became the party to the WHO convention.
