Water policy consultation takes place

Ulaanbaatar /MONTSAME/ March 22 marks World Water Day at initiative of the United Nations. On the occasion of the day, a consultation themed ‘Water Resources, Consumption, Protection and Implementation of Water Policy in Mongolia’ was co-organized by the Ministry of Environment and Tourism and the Cabinet Secretariat of Government of Mongolia on March 20.

Government of Mongolia prioritizes water policy issue in its development policy. “Many objectives set out in Mongolia's Sustainable Development Concept, Action Plan of the Government and ‘Water’ national program are carried out to protect water resources and improve water supply of population and pasture lands, water use in industries and settlement areas,” he said.
Mongolia ranks in the middle of the list of countries in the world by water consumption per capita, access and hygiene of drinking water. The survey shows that people who live in apartments use 140-160 liters of water a day, while residents of ger districts use 7-10 liters of water a day.
Gobi region is facing water scarcity due to climate changes and draught. Therefore, the consultation aimed at reconsidering water policy and defining issues that need special attention and changes to be made in the policy.
The consultation was attended by representatives of the Ministry of Environment and Tourism, the Ministry of Construction and Urban Development, the Ministry of Energy, Governor’s Office of Ulaanbaatar City, 2030 Water Resources Group of World Bank and other related organizations.
