Ulaanbaatar. January 18. /MONTSAME/. The Ministry of Food, Agriculture and Light Industry started a joint project on improving food safety and plant protection system with the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO). This project is significant as it is being carried out at a time when the use of pesticides is increasing in the world, especially in Asia, and agricultural land is running out.

Within the framework of the project, it aims to develop a registration and information system of plant genetic resources, support the proper use of pesticides, improve soil fertility management and apply international plant hygiene standards. Moreover, 70 percent of the food consumed by Mongolians is of plant origin. World Trade Organization assessed Mongolia as an import-dependent country for food.

The Ministry of Food, Agriculture, and Light Industry underlined that ensuring, monitoring, and protecting plant health is closely connected with food safety and human health.
