His Majesty the Emperor of Japan Visits the Water Supply and Sewerage Authority

Ulaanbaatar, July 7, 2025 /MONTSAME/. As part of the State Visit to Mongolia, at the invitation of President of Mongolia Khurelsukh Ukhnaa, His Majesty the Emperor of Japan visited the Water Supply and Sewerage Authority (WSSA) on July 7, 2025.
Director of WSSA, Mr. Turkhuu Tsogtsaikhan welcomed His Majesty and provided an overview of the agency’s operations.
Under Japan’s Official Development
Assistance (ODA) Grant Aid program, several projects aimed at enhancing the
drinking water supply for the capital city have been implemented. These include
the “Groundwater Resource Exploration for Water Supply” (1991–1996), Phase I of
the “Master Plan for the Urgent Rehabilitation of the Water Supply System”
(1997–2000), Phase II (2005–2007), and the “Gachuurt Water Source Project”
(2012–2014).
As a result of Japan’s support and
cooperation, Ulaanbaatar’s capacity for water collection, distribution, and
monitoring has significantly improved, accompanied by the modernization of its
technical infrastructure and technologies.
His Majesty Emperor Naruhito, who
studied hydrology at the University of Oxford, wrote his graduation thesis on
river transport along the Thames during the 18th and 19th centuries and later
authored the book “The Thames and I: A Memoir of Two Years at Oxford”.
His Majesty has maintained a lifelong
commitment to the study of hydrology and regularly participates in
international forums such as the World Water Forum, continuing his research at
an advanced academic level.
