Ulaanbaatar,
July 9, 2025 /MONTSAME/ The Science and Technology
Council of the Ministry of Roads and Transport has approved the feasibility
study for Lines I and II of the Ulaanbaatar Tram project.
The study had previously been reviewed and endorsed by the Ministry’s
Sub-council for Railways and verified by the Ministry’s Development Center. It
has now been approved by the professional council.
The “Ulaanbaatar Tram” project is planned to be implemented
along two routes in the capital. The first line will run from the summer camp
area (Zunjin Trade Center) to Sukhbaatar Square, while the second line will
extend from the office of the General Archives Authority of Mongolia to
Sukhbaatar Square. The first line of the double-rail tram will span 11 km with
16 stops, and the second line will extend 15 km with 23 stops.
This fully electric, eco-friendly mass transit system is
expected to reduce road congestion and air pollution caused by vehicle
emissions. As a result of the project, the average road traffic speed is
projected to increase by 25.7 percent.
Tram systems are widely used in cities around the world
alongside other high-capacity public transport systems such as metro lines, bus
rapid transit, and standard bus networks. In densely populated countries, tram
systems are being modernized with advanced technologies, becoming increasingly
smart and automated.
