Life and works of Zanabazar presented

Ulaanbaatar /MONTSAME/ On March 23, an event at the Maksimilian Voloshin Library and Cultural Center in Moscow provided its participants an opportunity to explore the artistic life of Undur Gegeen Zanabazar. 

 

At the event, Dr. Surenhand Syrtypaeva, Mongolist, Tibetologist, and senior researcher of the Institute of Oriental Studies of the Russian Academy of Sciences, delivered a lecture on life and works of the personage.



In her lecture, the researcher talked about the stylistic characteristics and themes of his masterworks including self-portraits and representations of deities housed at Gandantegchinlen Monastery, Bogd Khaan Palace Museum, Choijin Lama Temple Museum, and Erdene Zuu Monastery and personal collections, emphasizing that the artworks of Zanabazar known as the Michelangelo of Mongolia are kept in the United States, China, Russia’s Hermitage Museum and State Museum of Oriental Art, and personal collections.

 

Dr. Surenhand Syrtypaeva also remarked that a Russian collector once sold a Buddhist sculpture by Zanabazar to a Chinese counterpart for around CNY 70-80 million. Moreover, a sculpture of Amitabha from the collection of a Russian collector was displayed during the event.
