Minister D.Sarangerel receives Director of Data, Strategy and Innovation at WHO

Ulaanbaatar /MONTSAME/. On October 16, Minister of Health D.Sarangerel received Director of Data, Strategy, and Innovation at the World Health Organization (WHO) Western Pacific Region Dr. Gundo Weiler at the State House.
The main goal of his working visit in Mongolia is to inform officials about how the contents of the policy paper ‘For the Future: Towards the Healthiest and Safest Region’, which defines the policy and vision for the next 5 years, should be implemented on a national level, and how to plan for it in order to reach the long-term goal and objectives.
In correlation with the 70th Session of the WHO Regional Committee for the Western Pacific that was held recently in Manila, Philippines, a team led by Dr. Weiler was sent to Mongolia, as one of the selected countries to study how to plan on the national level, and successfully partner in the framework of the policy paper.
At the start of the meeting, Minister of Health D.Sarangerel expressed her gratitude to the WHO Western Pacific Region for selecting Mongolia in the study being conducted in aims of implementing the policy paper on the national level, and briefly introduced the measures being taken by the State Great Khural in the framework of Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) as well as SDGs that apply to the health sector, alongside introducing some of the main health statistics, such as maternal and newborn mortality, morbidity rate, and life expectancy.
It is speculated that the population of Mongolia will reach 4.2 million in 2040, and 5.7 million by 2050. Thus, the sides noted the necessity of calculating whether the health sector can fully satisfy the needs of the population by the year 2040 and 2050, and planning the measures that need to be taken.
Dr. Weiler highlighted the issue of preparedness during this time, especially in cross-border diseases, natural disasters and serious phenomenon caused by climate change, and health issues that could arise, has become a matter that is not only relative to the region, but also the whole world. He then noted the necessity of putting efforts into preparedness, creating a healthy, and safe country and region for the current as well as future generations, and that the WHO Western Pacific Region will fully support Mongolia's efforts towards the matter.
