Ulaanbaatar, October 3, 2025 /MONTSAME/. Today marks World Teachers’ Day.
UNESCO proclaimed October 5 of each year as World Teachers’ Day in 1994. In Mongolia, Teachers’ Day has been celebrated since 1966 in February. However, by the Government of Mongolia’s Resolution No. 412 of 2013, the “Procedure for Celebrating Anniversaries of Historical Events, Commemorative Days, Honoring Distinguished Achievers, and Perpetuating Their Memory” was amended to celebrate Mongolia’s Teachers’ Day on October 5 each year. In 2025, this day is being observed worldwide under the motto “Recasting teaching as a collaborative profession.”
On this day in 1966, UNESCO and the International Labour Organization (ILO) jointly organized an Intergovernmental Special Conference on the Status of Teachers and adopted the “Recommendation concerning the Status of Teachers.” The Recommendation defined international standards for the teaching profession. Although not legally binding, it is regarded as an important legal instrument to raise the status of teachers with the aim of improving the quality of education. The day is observed in more than 100 countries around the world.
On the occasion of Teachers’ Day, the National Statistics Office of Mongolia has presented the following figures. According to the Ministry of Education, in the 2024-2025 academic year, 55,000 full-time teachers are working in educational institutions at all levels. On average, one kindergarten teacher is responsible for 27 children, while one general education school teacher is responsible for 21 students.
