Environment Minister meets UNFAO representative

Ulaanbaatar/MONTSAME/. On February 10, Minister of
Environment and Tourism B.Bat-Erdene met with UN Food and Agricultural
Organization (UNFAO) Representative Vinod Ahuja.
At the meeting, FAO Representative Vinod Ahuja expressed UNFAO’s willingness to expand long-standing cooperation with the ministry to a strategic level. He also emphasized the fruitful cooperation between the Ministry of Environment and Tourism and the Food and Agriculture Organization in recent years, and asked the Minister to personally get acquainted with the results of the project.
He offered to work together on some issues such as making decision whether
to join the international project ‘Sustainable forest management impact program
on dryland sustainable landscapes’, developing a national program to
reduce greenhouse gas emissions caused by deforestation and degradation, as
well as continuing the current project.
Mr. Vinod Ahuja also expressed desire to cooperate preferably in desertification and land degradation reduction and protecting biodiversity adaptive
to climate change in Mongolia.
For his part, Environment Minister B.Bat-Erdene expressed support
for the project ‘Sustainable forest management impact program on dryland sustainable
landscapes’, saying “Through this project, we believe that capacity building,
introduction of technology and innovation, and development of forest
cooperation in the Central Asian region will be fostered to increase the
benefits for our country.
He also said that it is a timely measure in times of fiscal
difficulties because it has a double effect on projects targeted to increasing the ecosystem
value and putting it into economic circulation, improving resilience to climate
change as well as increasing greenhouse gas absorption.
At the end of the meeting, the sides signed a Memorandum of Understanding
and agreed to maintain bilateral cooperation in many areas, including
desertification, land degradation and climate change in Mongolia.
