No passengers transported by rail in January due to COVID-19 strict quarantine

Ulaanbaatar/MONTSAME/. In January 2021, no passengers were transported by rail due to the public emergency readiness regime as a result of Covid-19 disease. However, 2.6 million tonnes of freight were carried by railway transport in January, 180.0 thousand tonnes (7.4%) increase compared to the same period of the previous year. This increase was mainly due to a 194.8 thousand tonnes (23.6%) increase in domestic freight and a 78.5 thousand tonnes (29.7%) increase in import freight.


In January 2021, carried freight from railway transport reached 2.6 million tonnes, increased by 212.0 thousand tonnes (8.8%) compared to the previous month. 92.8% of carried freight by railway transport were mining freight, 3.3% -- construction materials, 1.3% -- food products, 0.5% -- agricultural products, 0.3% -- black iron, 0.2% -- wood products and 1.7% -- other products.


In January 2021, the revenue from railway transport reached MNT 63.4 billion, increased by MNT 1.4 billion or (2.2%) compared to the same period of the previous year. This increase was mainly due to the increases in the transportation of mining products, namely, coal, flours, and spar concentrates, and construction material.
