Ulaanbaatar /MONTSAME/. This is the pair of khanchin boots that the VIII Bogd Jebtsundamba wore when he was 10 years old.

Made by an unknown craftsman

Late XIX century

Cotton

47x24 cm

With a tall white sole made by gluing thin white felt on top of each other, the boots have red velvet shaft and vamp. ‘Khaan buguivch’ and ‘khatan suikh’ patterns (commonly found on traditional designs of wedding rings) are sewn onto the vamp, while a dragon and a fish are sewn onto the shaft using gold colored thread. The boots were worn for religious ceremonies.
