Mongolia to have national program on limiting deforestation and forest degradation

Ulaanbaatar /MONTSAME/ Ministry of Environment and Tourism is formulating a national program ‘Reducing global climate change by limiting deforestation and forest degradation’ with aims to protect forest resource of Mongolia and fight against global warming.
On December 13, the Ministry held a meeting to introduce necessity of formulation of the program and to get suggestions and recommendations from professional organizations regarding the issue.

Minister N.Tserenbat said the Ministry is working to complete the program formulation by April, 2018. "Major works of the program will target to forest protection and public awareness is crucial to it. Therefore citizens will be informed on laws and regulations to be observed when using forest and forest resources in order to prevent from illegal logging. Moreover financial support will be given to communities, NGOs and inspectors who are running active operations in this direction” highlighted the Minister.
Mongolia is collaborating closely with international investor organizations in forest protection. In 2011, Mongolia became partner country of the UN Program on Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation (REDD+). M.Tungalag, Director of Forest Policy and Coordination Department of the Ministry presented actions taken by Mongolia as the partner country.
Currently surveys and researches are being conducted to measure greenhouse gas emission that Mongolian forest absorbs, planning to sent the results to the UN in January 2018.
