Mongolian Women’s Basketball Team Achieves Historic Silver Medal

Ulaanbaatar, June 30, 2025 /MONTSAME/. The first FIBA 3x3 World Cup hosted by Mongolia concluded on June 29, 2025.

 

The Mongolian women’s team made history in the women’s category of team sports with a silver medal in the FIBA 3x3 World Cup. This marks a historic achievement in Olympic disciplines and team sports.

 

The Mongolian women’s basketball team defeated the powerful national team from the Federative Republic of Brazil with an end score of 16:14 in the group stage, but lost against the Spanish team 22:10. After their wins against the Olympic Champion team from the Federal Republic of Germany at 18:14 points and against one of the strongest teams in Europe – Ukraine at 18:16 points, the Mongolian women’s team came second in the group stage and qualified for the last sixteen. As for the single-elimination stage, they defeated the world-leading team from the People’s Republic of China 21:19, advancing into the quarterfinals. In the semifinals, the Mongolian women’s team won against the team from the homeland of basketball – the United States of America at 18:15 and against the Polish team at 18:17, advancing into the finals for the first time. Lastly, the Mongolian girls lost against the powerful team from the Kingdom of the Netherlands, securing a silver medal and opening a new chapter in the history of team sports, particularly basketball.

 

While the Dutch team improved on their previous success of a silver medal in the women’s category of the World Cup with a gold medal in the FIBA 3x3 World Cup, the team from Canada won a bronze medal. As for the men’s category of the FIBA 3x3 World Cup, the national team of the Kingdom of Spain won gold, the Swiss Confederation won silver, and the Republic of Serbia claimed bronze medals. In the men's world finals, players from the Kingdom of Spain, the Swiss Confederation, and the Republic of Serbia were included. In the women's team, in addition to the Netherlands and Canada, Mongolian player Khulan Onolbaatar was named. The title of the Most Valuable Player (MVP) was awarded to players from the gold-medal-winning Dutch and Spanish teams. Mongolian player Ariuntsetseg Bat-Erdene scored a leading total score of 44 points throughout the World Cup tournament, with 21 points from one-point attacks, 18 points from long-range shots, and five points from free throws.
