First harvest of strawberry expected in South Gobi

Umnugobi /MONTSAME/ The first harvest of strawberry, grown in South Gobi with two cultivars of strawberries of South Korea, is expected before the National Naadam Festival on July 11. Within the Mongolia-South Korea joint project “Green wall”, professors and students of the Mongolian University of Life Sciences (MULS) in collaboration with local community of Umnugobi aimag carried out strawberry plantation on a 1500 square meter field.
Based on trilateral cooperation of Umnugobi aimag, Gyongsang province of South Korea and the MULS, the aimag has set a goal to locally plant more than 50 per cent of the vegetable and fruits’ needs of the aimag.
In the first stage, 300-sq.meter five greenhouses were built on the ‘Green Wall’ project field, northwest of Dalanzadgad soum and two sorts of strawberries, which are considered as most adaptive and fastest growing on the Gobi soil were planted. “- We are taking all possible measures to avoid the soil moisture evaporated in hot weather condition. We are happy to see our first berries” said professor of the University T.Nasanjargal.
Moreover, watermelon, honeydew melon, tomatoes and onion were planted on an open field.
