International conference held for World Down Syndrome Day

Ulaanbaatar /MONTSAME/ On the occasion of the World Down Syndrome Day, March 21, Permanent Missions of Austria, Brazil, Israel, Canada, Qatar, Luxembourg, Mongolia, South Korea, Poland, United Kingdom, Singapore, India and Japan to the United Nations, UNICEF, International Disability Alliance and Inclusion International and Down Syndrome International NGOs co-organized an international conference on March 21 at the UN headquarters in New York. 

The conference was held under the theme "My voice, my community – Enabling people with Down syndrome to speak up, be heard and influence government policy and action, to be fully included in the community” and was attended by people with Down syndrome and representatives of public and non-governmental organizations. 

Participants of the conference underlined the significance of bringing positive images of people with Down syndrome to light and social development for the individuals in order to give them an opportunity to make their voice heard. 

S.Oyun, former MP and Chairwoman of Down Syndrome Association of Mongolia attended the international conference and he;held meetings with Andrew Boys, Director of ‘Down Syndrome International’ to inform and exchange views about the policy of the Mongolian government and social and public initiative on the protection of rights of the people with disabilities. 

Over 60 countries have been marking the World Down Syndrome Day since 2006 upon the initiative of the Down Syndrome International In 2011, the UN Assembly issued a resolution to declare March 21 of every year as a day to protect the rights of people with Down syndrome.
