Ulaanbaatar, September 16, 2025 /MONTSAME/. This year, World Ozone Day is being observed under the theme “From Science to Global Action”, marking the 40th anniversary of the Vienna Convention for the Protection of the Ozone Layer – widely regarded as one of the most successful international environmental agreements in history.

As climate change and environmental challenges grow more severe, countries around the globe are celebrating this milestone, acknowledging the importance of science-based decisions and collective action. The annual observance on September 16 highlights the ongoing dedication of countries to protect the ozone layer through global collaboration.

Thanks to decades of international cooperation, the ozone layer is expected to recover to 1980 levels by 2066 in Antarctica, 2045 in the Arctic, and 2040 in other regions. This progress reflects the effectiveness of the Montreal Protocol, which phased out ozone-depleting substances and continues to develop through amendments such as the Kigali Amendment.

The Kigali Amendment on Substances that Deplete the Ozone Layer aims to reduce global warming by 0.3 to 0.5 degrees Celsius by 2100 through the phasedown of hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs), which are potent greenhouse gases, used in cooling technologies. Experts estimate that these benefits could be doubled through improvements in energy efficiency.

Since joining the Vienna Convention and the Montreal Protocol in 1996, Mongolia has remained committed to protecting the ozone layer by phasing out ozone-depleting substances and reducing the use of chemicals that contribute to global warming.

In 2022, Mongolia became the 137th country to ratify the Kigali Amendment to the Montreal Protocol, reinforcing its dedication to climate action. To support the phase-out of ozone-depleting substances, the government is working to strengthen its licensing, registration, and control systems, while enhancing inspection and monitoring mechanisms in cooperation with international organizations.

Mongolia also conducts annual capacity-building training for customs officers, refrigeration engineers, and technicians to ensure the effective implementation of international agreements. In addition, the country is leading public awareness campaigns and expanding the involvement of youth, government agencies, private sector stakeholders, and civil society in efforts to protect the ozone layer and promote sustainable environmental practices.
