Ulaanbaatar/MONTSAME/. On April 23, Governor of Khovd aimag Mr. Dugerjav B. and Head of Citizens’ Representatives Khural of Khovd aimag Mr. Purevgandi G. officially opened the Khovd office of the German Technical Cooperation Project ‘Supporting Protected Areas for the Conservation of Ecosystem Services’ (SPACES) at the building of the Department of Environment and Tourism.

The project is supported by the German Government and implemented by the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH in cooperation with the Department of Protected Area Management of the Mongolian Ministry of Environment and Tourism.

The Governor and the Head of Citizens’ Representatives Khural and GIZ Project Manager Dr. Michael Trockenbrodt jointly performed the ribbon-cutting ceremony. Also present were Vice Governors, the Head of the Department of Environment and Tourism, Head of the Department of Investment and Development Policy and representatives of Protected Area Administration.

For the upcoming years, the SPACES office will be the base of a team of international and Mongolian GIZ project staff who will support Protected Area Administrations, the Department of Environment and Tourism and other stakeholders in improving the framework conditions for the sustainable development of protected areas. The geographical focus of SPACES lies on two larger landscape areas (Clusters) for which Memorandums of Understanding have been signed by the Ministry of Environment and Tourism and the aimag administrations.

The SPACES team will assist the cluster members in coordinating their conservation activities and support them in the areas of tourism development, livelihood improvement and protected area management. All this should lead to improved conservation efforts in the two larger landscapes (clusters).

SPACES will coordinate its efforts closely with a different project that is also supported by the German Government but implemented with the help of the KfW Development Bank, the Financial Cooperation Project ‘Biodiversity and Adaptation to Climate Change’.
