Matilda Dimovska: Used Wisely, Artificial Intelligence Can Power Mongolia’s Vision 2050

On May 20, 2025, the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in Mongolia presented the Human Development Report 2025, themed "A Matter of Choice: People and Possibilities in the Age of Artificial Intelligence," which analyzes human development progress across a broad range of indicators.
The Report shows how Artificial Intelligence (AI) could reignite development. Instead of seeing sustained recovery following the period of exceptional crises of 2020-2021, the Report reveals unexpectedly weak progress. Excluding those years of crisis, the low rise in global human development projected this year is the smallest increase since 1990. Projections for 2024 reveal stalled progress on the HDI in all regions across the world.
The report outlines three critical areas for action:
- Building an economy where people collaborate with AI rather than compete against it
- Embedding human agency across the full AI lifecycle, from design to deployment
- Modernizing education and health systems to meet 21st-century demands
UNDP Resident Representative in Mongolia Matilda Dimovska remarked, “AI is not just a technology, but also a mirror reflecting our values and priorities. Used wisely, it can power Mongolia’s Vision 2050 and accelerate the achievement of the SDGs. We need to not just ask what AI can do, but what it can do for people, so it truly expands our choices and opportunities.”
In the Report, Mongolia ranked 104 out of 193 countries with an HDI rating of 0.747, an increase of 26 percent since 1990.
Mongolia’s life expectancy at birth increased by 12.9 years, mean years of schooling increased by 0.9 years, and expected years of schooling grew by 3.5 years, while GDP per capita rose by 148.4 percent.
During the Report Launch Event, a panel discussion was held on how Mongolia can localize the report’s recommendations and align AI transformation with national priorities.
