Ulaanbaatar, April 4, 2024 /MONTSAME/. The General Authority of Education of Mongolia and Orbis International are collaborating on a project to enhance the eye health of students in Mongolian kindergartens and schools. The initiative is targeting 33 selected institutions.

In this regard, Minister of Education and Science of Mongolia Enkh-Amgalan Luvsantseren received Bruce D. Moore, Professor at New England College of Optometry, Boston, Kenneth Youngstein, Managing Director at Foundation for Health & Mind Development, Founder & CEO of Biocom Ltd. and Author of “Tuya and The Talking Grass,” Chimgee Chuluunkhuu, Country Director in Mongolia for Orbis International, and other project coordinators on April 4, 2024.

Professor and researcher Bruce Moore, with 50 years of experience in children's vision health, has spent the past 25-30 years for developing and promoting a child-centered eye examination method. This method has been adopted by schools in the United States, where eye exams are mandatory for children and covered by health insurance. In Mongolia, the project conducted examinations on target school students utilizing Moore's method and revealed that 45 percent of them had vision problems. Following these findings, the meeting focused on discussions around implementing school-based vision screening and examinations.

Dr. Kenneth Youngstein, a neuroscientist, expressed his eagerness to collaborate in providing eye health education to parents, caregivers, and children while enhancing their communication skills and attitudes as part of the project.

In Mongolia, relevant laws stipulate that an electronic registration database for monitoring the health of secondary school students should be established and preventive measures, early detection examinations, tests, and diagnoses should be frequently carried out at specific ages.

The Parties discussed opportunities to make certain decisions to improve eye health among students and to implement these measures nationwide.
