U.S. Ambassador expresses wish to observe upcoming Parliamentary election

Ulaanbaatar /MONTSAME/ Head of the General Election Commission (GEC) Ch.Sodnomtseren held a meeting with Ambassador of the United States to Mongolia Michael Klecheski on May 20.
At the start of the meeting, Mr. Sodnomtseren briefed about the preparations for the forthcoming 2020 parliamentary election and organization of voting processes. He said “Since this election is to be held amid COVID-19 pandemic, we are strictly following instructions and guidelines being issued by the State Emergency Commission. The election campaigning will be conducted within the forms and scope of practices allowed by the law on Parliamentary Elections”.
He further informed that “A new regulation on the use of internet in advertising campaign has been added to the law, and accordance with which, we are collaborating with the Communications Regulatory Commission and Facebook Company. We are hopeful of high voter turnout in the upcoming legislative elections.”
Due to border restrictions, foreign citizens are unable to travel to Mongolia, the Head of the Election Commission invited representatives of the foreign diplomatic missions in Mongolia to serve as election observers.
In turn, U.S. Ambassador Michael Klecheski expressed his willingness to take part as an observer in the 2020 parliamentary election and also stressed about the possibility of collaboration for strengthening voter education.
As the United States Agency for International Development will carry out a project to expand women and youth engagement in the electoral and political process starting October this year, the U.S. Ambassador also proposed to cooperate in this area.
