Number of media outlets increases to 502

Ulaanbaatar /MONTSAME/. A new statistical report on the Mongolian media sector of the Press Institute has been published.


According to some of the indicators included in the “Mongolian Media - Today” report of 2020, the number of media outlets has been declining every year since 2013, but increased by 14 in 2018 and 45 in 2019, reaching 502.


This increase was mainly due to the increase in the number of news sites. The number of print media outlets, such as newspapers, continues to decline. In 2019, the number of newspaper fell to the lowest in 20-year, with newspaper sales down 5 percent and magazine sales down 44 percent.


The electronic transition in the media sector is in full swing. As of the beginning of 2019, 154 news sites regularly provide up-to-date information to the public, of which 20 are local. It is becoming more common for media outlets to use social media to distribute, promote, and interact with their audience. For instance, 85 percent of TV stations broadcast on their official Facebook pages and interacts through it. In addition, the number of radio stations available online has tripled, and there are 23 television stations that can broadcast on their websites.


About 4,700 people work in the media, half of whom are journalists and editors. About 60 percent of them have higher education in journalism. More than 50 percent of media workers work in the television industry.
