Construction of new Wastewater Treatment Plant commences
SocietyUlaanbaatar /MONTSAME/ On February 28, a groundbreaking ceremony of the new Central Wastewater Treatment Plant of Ulaanbaatar city to be built with a CNY 1 million soft loan from the Chinese government took place. Present at the ceremony were Prime Minister U.Khurelsukh, Minister of Construction and Urban Development Kh.Badelkhan, Foreign Minister D.Tsogtbaatar, Ambassador of China to Mongolia Xing Haiming, Mayor of Ulaanbaatar and Governor of capital city S.Amarsaikhan and other officials.
A mechanical
wastewater treatment plant was established in the capital city in 1964, and was last renovated in 1986. The current plant has
a daily capacity of treating 230 thousand cubic meters of sewage. As for the new
treatment plant, it will not only treat 250 thousand cubic meters of sewage in
three stages, but also satisfy 53 percent of its own electricity demand by
producing biogas from the sludge. Moreover, odors generated from the treatment
process will be cleansed with biological waste gas treatment techniques and the
Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) system will be applied in the
plant.
The
treatment plant will be built on 40 hectares of land in Songinokhairkhan
district. About 61 percent or 24.7 ha of the land will be the main construction
site and road, sidewalks and green space will be built on the remaining
area.
In his
remarks at the groundbreaking ceremony, PM U.Khurelsukh said “Construction of
the new treatment plant has been discussed over the years since 2001. The
construction work of an international standard plant starts today”
“A greywater
treatment plant will also be built. Thus, Mongolia will be using treated greywater
for the first time. I tasked relevant officials to immediately attend to the
reconstruction issue when I took my office in 2007,” the PM added.
For his
part, Minister Kh.Badelkhan said “The construction work will be jointly conducted
by Mongolian and two Chinese companies that have previous experience in construction
of wastewater treatment plant. Some of the building materials will be supplied
domestically. Staff to be working in the plant will undergo a six-month training and we predict that the operation will be normalized
within a year after the inauguration.”
Ambassador
Xing Haiming noted “Construction project of the new treatment plant of Ulaanbaatar
city is an important part of the cooperation between the countries. We hope
that the project would contribute to the friendly bilateral relations”
