German Embassy hosts discussion on politics

‘Politics as a Vocation’ is an essay by German economist and sociologist Max Weber (1864–1920). The essay was published in an extended version in July 1919 and today it is regarded as a classic work of political science and sociology. Thanks to the cooperation of the Monsudar Publishing House with the Goethe-Institute, ‘Politics as a Vocation’ is now available in Mongolian translation.
On the occasion of the book launch, the German Ambassador Stefan Duppel invited renowned representatives of politics and society to discuss key issues of modern politics which had already been asked by Max Weber in 1919 in his book.
Panelists including MP T. Ayursaikhan, MP M. Oyunchimeg and Executive Director of the Institute for Direct Democracy and Decentralization A. Saruul discussed key questions such as “What is a modern state?” or “What are the practical and moral demands to individual politicians?”. In addition, Ts. Tsogzolmaa, Minister of Education, Culture, Science and Sport, and Ts. Davaasuren, Minister of Energy, attended the event as honorary guests.
At the event, the participants reflected and discussed to what extent Max Weber’s questions can give suggestions to today's politics. Max Weber published his essay almost one hundred years ago – when the world was in devastation and Germany began to find its first democratic parliamentary political system. He provided in his book a succinct analysis of the demands that a new generation of professional politicians would have to face in order to help the young democracy succeed. It became obvious that the questions Max Weber dealt with during that time are still our questions nowadays.
