Ulaanbaatar /MONTSAME/ Within the cooperation between the National Center for Maternal and Child Health (NCMCH), Taiwanese Chang Gung Memorial Hospital and Noordhoff Craniofacial Foundation, free operations were conducted on Mongolian children with cleft lip and palate (orofacial cleft) on November 21-23. Over 170 Mongolian children in total have had this kind of surgery since the project started in 2010.

"Taiwanese Chang Gung Memorial Hospital made effort to overspread new treatment methods and technology in the past nine years. As a result of it, a professional team from the NCMCH is now performing surgery to repair cleft lip and palate and treatment for correcting irregularities of tooth and speech therapy. They have operated surgery on 450 children. Orofacial cleft is congenital abnormalities, which occurs largely, nevertheless, it is possible to be fully recovered if complex treatment could be made," said Luo Lun Zhou, Head of the medical team.

Moreover, 13 Mongolian doctors have had training at the Chang Gung Memorial Hospital to learn from latest treatment methods for cleft lip and palate.

Established in 1989, the Noordhoff Foundation has performed operation for about 2000 children gratuitously, sending its medical teams over 80 times to nine countries such as Mongolia, Vietnam and Cambodia. It also has conducted training in 19 countries, involving over 160 hospital workers.
