Wind and solar can ensure 80 percent of Ulaanbaatar’s electricity need

Ulaanbaatar /MONTSAME/ Presentation of the final report of the ‘Ulaanbaatar City Energy Master Plan’ research was held at the Tuushin hotel on October 16.
The research is being conducted by the Fraunhofer Institute for Solar Energy of Germany within the ‘Integrated Resource Management in Asian Cities: The Urban Nexus’ joint project by German Society for International cooperation (GIZ) and the Ulaanbaatar city authority, funded by the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development.
“Energy sector of Ulaanbaatar city is 100 percent dependent on coal. We have studied the opportunities to avoid coal consumption and move gradually to lower greenhouse gas emission system within 20-30 years. As a result, wind and solar could meet about 80 percent of Ulaanbaatar’s electricity needs. It is possible to place wind turbines and solar panels on the roofs of the buildings and slopes, which will produce 1500 MW of electricity,” said Ruth Erlbeck, project manager at GIZ.
The study provides a comprehensive study on the heat, electricity production, distribution, supply, and proposes options for energy supply and measures to be taken in the future.
Stakeholders emphasized that the support of Mongolian decision makers is important to further realization of the study.
Over 30 representatives of energy sector, capital city agencies, engineering network organizations, international, banking and financial institutions and private sector took part in the event at the invitation.
