Ulaanbaatar, July 4, 2025 /MONTSAME/. The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) provided an update on the current risks posed by floods and forest and steppe fires across Mongolia.

During the briefing, Head of the Risk Management Division at NEMA Major Sh. Ankhtuya presented the national flood risk assessment. According to the assessment, among the 21 aimags, three aimags —Orkhon, Gobisumber, and Sukhbaatar—are classified as high-risk (orange level). Sixteen provinces are at medium risk, including Bayan-Ulgii, Uvs, Khovd, Zavkhan, Gobi-Altai, Bayankhongor, Khuvsgul, Bulgan, Tuv, Uvurkhangai, Umnugobi, Dundgobi, Darkhan-Uul, Selenge, Dornogobi, and Khentii, while Dornod and Arkhangai are considered low-risk areas.

At the soum level, among the 330 soums nationwide, the breakdown is as follows:

  • Very high risk: 19 soums
  • High risk: 30 soums
  • Medium risk: 159 soums
  • Low risk: 94 soums
  • Very low risk: 28 soums

NEMA has estimated that 137,740 households in 49 soums are currently at very high risk of flooding, urging citizens to remain alert and prepared.

In addition to flood concerns, the Agency reported a sharp rise in forest and steppe fires since the beginning of the year. As of July 3, 151 wildfire incidents have been recorded across 65 soums in 12 aimags and three districts in the capital, marking a 50.3 percent increase compared to the same period last year.

Currently, 417 emergency personnel, supported by eight vehicles and one helicopter, have been deployed to extinguish four fires in Yeruu, Khüder, and Mandal soums of Selenge aimag, while having suppressed three wildfires in Bayangol and Yeruu soums of the aimag, reported NEMA on July 3, 2025.
