Ulaanbaatar /MONTSAME/ During its meeting on November 24, the Cabinet authorized the export of nonbreeding small ruminants from aimags and soums, where no case of livestock contagious disease was registered.

The decision was made in correlation with livestock growth and adequacy of hay and fodder, and in order to increase income of herding households.

Ministers and officials in charge were tasked to negotiate with the corresponding Ministries and specialized organizations of the importer countries, and provide policy, assistance and management to provincial administrations. Governors of certain aimags were assigned to conduct necessary examination and inspection of meat prepared for export to meet with the standards required by the importer country and take other measures.

A study suggests that 11 million heads of livestock is required for Mongolia’s annual domestic demand of meat, and export of about 6 million heads of livestock is possible, without threatening the gene pool of domestic animals.

By far, Mongolia has established meat export agreements with the People’s Republic of China, the Russian Federation, Vietnam and Iran, and exported 18 thousand tons of meat. Mongolia also made a request to the People’s Republic of China and had 36 meat-processing plants inspected.

The Ministry of Food, Agriculture and Light Industry estimates that 27.4 thousand tons of meat - 13.6 thousand tons of mutton and 13.8 thousand tons of goat meat- can be exported this year.
