In Khuvsgul, Bulgan, Orkhon, Darkhan-Uul, and Selenge aimags, which are home to 525,000 people, more than 10 percent are under cancer surveillance. Statistics from the National Cancer Center indicate that over 900 people die of cancer annually in this region, while about 580 new cases are recorded each year. These figures show that the northern region ranks first in cancer morbidity and second in cancer mortality nationwide.
In this region, 71.3 percent of cancer patients are diagnosed at an advanced stage.
Therefore, on August 6, 2025, the Government decided to establish a Northern Regional Cancer Diagnosis and Treatment Sub-Center. Accordingly, on September 7, 2025, the Sub-Center was inaugurated in Erdenet city, enabling residents of the northern region to receive specialized diagnostic and treatment services locally.
The Sub-Center will provide comprehensive services, including early screening, diagnosis, and treatment. It is now prepared to conduct surgeries for gynecological, liver, and breast cancers. Two MRI and tomography machines have been installed, and further specialized equipment will be supplied in stages.
The Sub-Center has 177 staff positions. Ten doctors from the National Cancer Center will work here. It has the capacity to provide inpatient treatment for 35 patients, administer chemotherapy to 30 patients per day, and serve up to 500 outpatients daily.
With the establishment of the Northern Regional Cancer Diagnosis and Treatment Sub-Center, the workload of the National Cancer Center is expected to decrease by up to 16 percent. In addition, the financial burden on individuals and families will be reduced while saving time, according to the Media and Public Relations Department of the Government of Mongolia.
