Tavantolgoi-Gashuunsukhait railway construction progresses
Economy
The 240-km railroad will run through the territories of
Tsogttsetsii, Bayan-Ovoo and Khanbogd soums of Umnugobi aimag, with 16 bridges, and eight livestock crossings. Currently, the project employs 1801
engineers, technicians and workers along with over 770 construction machines
and equipment.
Earthworks of the first 208 kilometer railroad have been completed,
alongside 98 percent complete of drainage works, 97 percent complete of livestock
crossings, and 46 percent progress of infrastructure work.
Construction of the railway will make it possible to transport
and export 30 million tons of coking and thermal coal per year. In addition,
it is expected to give many social and economic benefits such as a
considerable decrease in pasture degradation, dust, noise, soil and air
pollution, and reduction of traffic accidents. Moreover, up to 30 million tons
of coal will be exported annually through the railway port alone, which will
increase the extraction of coal at mines near the Tavan Tolgoi deposits by 2-3 times, and about 2000 jobs will be newly created.
