President Ts.Elbegdorj opens first session of new Parliament

On the 5th of July, President Ts.Elbegdorj opened the first session of the State Great Khural, formed as a result of the 7th democratic parliamentary elections of Mongolia. He confirmed his official receipt of names of 76 members of parliament.

The President highlighted the voter turnout was the highest we’ve seen since the 1992 elections. He applauded the media for direct broadcasting of election processes.

He called on the MPs to discuss the bill on accountability, to set up a professional cabinet, and maintain the continuity of Mongolian state’s open and consistent policies.

After President delivered a speech, the new members of Parliament took oaths. 

At its very first plenary meeting held Tuesday under chairmanship of Mr Ch.Ulaan, the session of new parliament has elected Mr Enkhbold Miyegombo as the Speaker of the State Great Khural. He was nominated with 86.8 percent of votes of MPs.

Born July 19, 1964 in Ulaanbaatar, M.Enkhbold graduated from the city’s 1st school in 1982 and the National University of Mongolia (NUM) in 1987, majoring in economics. He secured a master’s degree in economics.

M.Enkhbold worked as the Mayor of Ulaanbaatar city between 1999 and 2005, and he was elected three times as a member of parliament in periods of 2004-2008, 2008-2012 and 2012-2016. He also worked as the chairman of the Mongolian People’s Revolutionary Party (MPRP) from 2005 to 2007, as the Prime Minister between 2006 and 2007, and as the Deputy Premier between 2007 and 2012.
