Anticipating the 11th ASEM Summit, the Asia Europe People’s Forum of civil societies commenced today in Ulaanbaatar. More than 500 participants gathered from some 40 countries are discussing pressing issues to compile seven key strategies.

The People’s Forum, which started in Bangkok in 1996 with delegates of 15 countries, is now joined by 53 countries and two international organizations- ASEAN and European Commission.

The Forum was opened by Mongolian President Ts.Elbegdorj. In his speech, he underlined that Mongolia is striving to ensure better connection between Asia and Europe as the host country. Adequate legal grounds must be set to ensure better collaboration between civil societies and executive governance, for instance, in Mongolia.

The two-day event will touch upon a wide range of issues such as fair distribution of natural resources, restoring of food security and independence, means of justice in resolving climate change, sustainable energy production, justice in trade and investment, social security, adequate workplace, sustainable livelihoods, participatory democracy, rights of minorities, gender equality, peace, migration, terrorism and countermeasures for fundamentalism.

By intensifying the cooperation of peoples of Asia and Europe, Eurasia will achieve actual effectiveness in global peace and welfare.
