Ulaanbaatar, September 11, 2024 /MONTSAME/. Head of the Office of the President of Mongolia Zandanshatar Gombojav received a delegation from the Prague Zoo of the Czech Republic, headed by Director of the Prague Zoo Miroslav Bobek on September 11, 2024.

At the meeting, the two sides exchanged views on expanding cooperation between Mongolia and the Czech Republic in takhi (Przewalski Horse) reintroduction, as well as in the protection of wildlife and the environment.

Mr. Zandanshatar expressed gratitude to the Prague Zoo for implementing a project to reintroduce takhi to the Great Gobi Strictly Protected Area for over 30 years, improving facilities of the Protected Area Administration, capacity building for personnel, and intensifying research works.

The Prague Zoo is making preparations to conduct an environmental assessment of the Gobi and dry grassland ecosystem region, carry out nationwide research to define ecologically significant areas that require special protection, provide professional consultation and support on taking areas under special protection, introduce innovative methods for environmental protection, and reintroduce takhi to the Sumiin Khooloi area of the Numrug Strictly Protected Area located in the Khalkh Gol soum of Dornod aimag.

In 1998, the Prague Zoo brought one takhi stallion and two takhi mares to the Gobi Specially Protected Area. Thanks to the efforts of the reintroduction of takhi to the Khustai Mountain Range and Khomiin Tal Steppe, the population of takhi has reached around 1,000 today.
