Ulaanbaatar /MONTSAME/. The 70th session of the WHO Regional Committee for the Western Pacific took place in Manila, Philippines between October 7 and 11. Mongolian government delegates led by Minister of Health D.Sarangerel attended the session.

This year’s session was special for introducing and holding a wide-range discussion on ‘For the Future: Towards the Healthiest and Safest Region’, a policy paper defining the policy and vision for the next 5 years, which was approved by all of the member countries.

Documents such as ‘the Regional Action Plan for Tobacco Control in the Western Pacific (2020-2030)’, ‘Regional Action Framework on Protecting Children from the Harmful Impact of Food Marketing in the Western Pacific’, and ‘the Framework for Accelerating Action to Fight Antimicrobial Resistance in the Western Pacific Region’ were also discussed and approved.

During the session, Minister of Health D.Sarangerel held an official meeting with WHO Regional Director for the Western Pacific Dr. Takeshi Kasai. The sides briefly discussed some of the matters requiring support from the region and the issues agreed to implement during the regional director’s visit to Mongolia in June 2019.

The delegates then participated in the discussion held under the theme, ‘Digital Health’, alongside delegates of Malaysia, PRC, and Japan, and introduced how IT is being used in giving health care services throughout the country without being limited by time and distance.

Furthermore, the Mongolian delegates participated in the discussion on the yearly report for the implementation of technical projects being implemented by WHO, and reported on the measures taken by the Government of Mongolia on each project and programme, noting some of the challenges in implementation and issues that need support from the regional committee.
