Ulaanbaatar /MONTSAME/ President Kh.Battulga has urged the Parliament to take decisive measures to improve air quality in the capital city, expressing his concerns regarding the deteriorating situation.
On January 5, the President addressed the Parliamentary plenary meeting during its discussion of a draft resolution titled ‘Air Pollution Reduction Measures’ and his proposal to declare a State of Emergency against air pollution, which was forwarded to Parliament Speaker M.Enkhbold on December 28.
While expressing his dissatisfaction with the implementation of a recommendation on air pollution reduction measures issued by the National Security Council on January 10, 2017, the President criticized the low attendance of MPs at the Parliament session.
“Having reached disastrous level, air pollution has become a matter of emergency,” stated the President, citing the possibility of a motion to dissolve the Parliament unless no steady actions are taken.

On December 28, the Parliament addressed air pollution and formed a working group in charge, which has met twice since to come up with the draft resolution ‘Air Pollution Reduction Measures’.
The draft resolution recommends comprehensive measures including revising and adopting some laws and procedures related to air pollution reduction within the autumn session of the Parliament; carrying out a set of actions to reduce air pollution and protect public health against air pollution within 2018; intensifying ger area re-planning and transition to apartments; and taking phased actions to limit raw coal consumption in ger areas.
In accordance with the draft resolution, a report on the implementation of the National Security Council recommendation on air pollution reduction will be made before February 1.
Parliamentary discussion of the issue continues.
