Mongolia and Russia discuss forest fire prevention issues

Ulaanbaatar /MONTSAME/ Mongolian and Russian officials reviewed the implementation of measures taken under the Intergovernmental Agreement on Protection of Forest from Wildfire and held a constructive talk on future actions in Moscow.
On October 12, the Joint Commission on the Mongolia-Russia Intergovernmental Agreement on Protection of Forest from Wildfire held its fifth meeting in the Russian capital city.
The meeting was co-chaired by Ts.Batbayar, Acting Deputy Minister for Environment and Tourism and Ivan Valentik, Deputy Minister of Natural Resources and Environment and Head of the Federal Agency for Forestry of Russian Federation.
The sides exchanged views on the bilateral regional cooperation in bordering areas, prevention of forest fires along the border and potential projects that can be realized in this area.
An important topic that surfaced at the meeting was protecting forests from insects such as Siberian moth. The Russian side shared its experience in fighting the forest insects, and expressed its readiness to develop bilateral cooperation in this area. The Mongolian side emphasized the increasing professional workforce in forestry in Mongolia and expressed its interest in reviving the old tradition of training workforces in Russia.
The meeting was attended by representatives of environmental ministries, emergency bodies, border authorities and forestry organizations of both countries, the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, officials in charge of environment and border issues at the Mongolian Embassy in Russia and delegates from border authorities. As such, the meeting was an effective platform for comprehensive dialogue on prevention of forest fire.
