Ulaanbaatar /MONTSAME/ According to 2016 census, 27 species of 7,583 invidual birds spent the winter in Ulaanbaatar. The number went up to 31 species of 9,494 individuals in 2017.
The Environmental Department of the Ulaanbaatar City Administration and the Mongolian Bird Conservation Center involved all kinds of birds in seven districts of the city and that live through the harsh winter of Ulaanbaatar, the coldest capital city in the world.

Participation of young people in this action with great significance in terms of scientific research and environment conservation has been increasing year by year. Training themed “Long-term monitoring methodologies on census of birds, overwintering in Ulaanbaatar” was held on February 18, a day before commencement of the census. The organizers view that the training had a lot to do with the improved result of census.

11 species out of 31 observed species of birds had populations of more than 100 individuals. Aside from Daurian partridges and ruddy shelducks, all other species come across around the city center. The majority of populations of Daurian partridges, Cinereous vultures and striped woodpeckers were observed in the city’s green zones, distances from settlements. Other common birds include hill pigeons (1,624), Arctic warblers (1,211), common ravens (1,050), red-billed choughs (825), Eurasian magpies (594) and ravens (294).
