Crop harvesting halts due to blizzard

Ulaanbaatar /MONTSAME/ The Ministry of Food, Agriculture and Light Industry reported Monday that crop harvesting is 88.3 per cent complete nationwide by October 8, whereas vegetable harvesting is 94.5 per cent.

The 2017 preliminary balance indicated that 271.8 thousand tons of crop including 259.2 thousand tons of wheat is expected to be harvested from 288 thousand hectares cultivated land, 102.3 thousand tons of potatoes--from 11.2 thousand hectares, 75.7 thousand tons of vegetables--from 6.9 thousand hectares, 23.6 thousand tons of oil plant--from 46.5 thousand hectares and 47.3 thousand tons of fodder plant--from 43.5 thousand hectares.

Although the continued rain after August 10 hindered harvesting nationwide, land farmers have intensified their efforts by adjusting the used harvest techniques with the weather conditions and yield maturity.

As such, 204.4 thousand tons of crop has been harvested from 241.1 thousand hectares, 100 thousand tons of potatoes--form 10.7 thousand hectares, 71.6 thousand tons of vegetables--from 6.6 thousand hectares, 8.2 thousand tons of oil plant--from 16.2 thousand hectares and 31.1 thousand tons of fodder plant--from 26.1 thousand hectares as of October 8.

However, harvesting works have been temporarily halted as agricultural regions in Darkhan-Uul, Tuv, Bulgan, Arkhangai, Uvurkhangai and Khentii aimags are covered in 3-10 cm deep snow as a result of the blizzard of October 7-8.

On the national level, a total of 33.1 thousand hectares areas -31.9 thousand hectares crop land and 1.2 thousand hectares potato and vegetable--hasn’t been harvested.

Crop harvesting has been completed in all aimags except for Sukhbaatar aimag where the performance rate is 49.8 per cent, Dornod aimag--with 74 per cent, Uvurkhangai aimag with--75.7 per cent, Darkhan-Uul aimag--with 84 per cent, Khentii aimag--with 94.5 per cent, Tuv aimag--with 91.1 per cent, Bulgan--with 96.2 per cent and Selenge aimag--with 86.6 per cent.
