Exhibition ‘Umsgal’: Modern Twist on Traditional Garments

and artist Purevmaa Serchmaa unveiled her everyday designs of the national
costume through her solo exhibition “Umsgal” at the National Art Gallery of
Mongolia on February 1, 2026.
For the past 30 years, Purevmaa
has been studying and creating daily styles of Mongolian traditional clothing,
weaving heritage with modern lifestyle.
The exhibition “Umsgal” portrays the
wearable culture and nomadic philosophy of Mongolians through the lens of daily
utility.
The name “Umsgal,” or “Ums (Wear)/Gal
(Fire),” symbolizes the protection of the self and life force with what one
wears. Until February 7, 2026, the exhibition showcases over 20 clothing
designs for deel (Mongolian traditional dress), Mongolian shirts, pants, bags,
hats, and belts, made from natural animal-derived raw materials that are light
and comfortable on the body.
Actress, artist Purevmaa Serchmaa has left her distinctive mark on the Mongolian stage and screen arts scene and is well-known for her role as Urlee in the Mongolian classic film “Bi Chamd Hairtai” (I Love You). Purevmaa, who has performed over 20 roles on stage and screen throughout her acting career, is now a fashion designer of modern-style traditional clothes.
